Funny you'd ask about this as I'm sitting here after my 4th day at the NFPA232 Committee Meeting.

There was a major incident at a Brambles/Recall Facility in Chicago, and a USFA report on the incident is available at the NARA website (just go to www.archives.gov and search for it) then there were actually *3* incidents at Iron Mountain facilities in New Jersey, (i believe they were in 1997) and they were suspected as being arson, but that's no excuse... they could have done more to prevent someone gaining acces to the facility as is called for in the NFPA232 standard. The third, as Peter mentioned was the Diversified Fire in West Pittston, PA.

There have been some other smaller incidents, but these were total burn outs, resulting in major losses... and the Diversified one was the only one resulting in major awards to the clients.

As for Standards, NFPA232 is what you're looking for, asfor other Guidance, ARMA has a Checklist that is availabel for public review and evaluation presently at www.arma.org on the Standards page that you may want to take a look at. You might want to also look at the ARMA/ANSI 5-2003 Standard on vital records protection while you're there.

Does anybody remember a story about a third party storage vendor having a
disaster at their facility in recent years? What kind of compensation did
the customers get for their material being destroyed? Is there an
industry standard? Thanks for your help.
