Dear colleagues:
I will be participating in a seminar in Tromso on electronic documents at the end of June. This is the first international meeting of all the various regions and countries where electronic documents studied: U.S. and Canada (Francophone as well as English), Germany, France, and Scandinavia. The purpose of the conference is two-fold: the Ph.D. students will work on substantive issues of form, meaning and medium; and the senior scholars will work on a plan of study for the next few years. I will represent the only records management expertise, but there will be some expertise in medical informatics represented.
I am writing to you to get some idea what direction you think our studies should take. In the academic seminars and conferences I have attended, I notice that records management contributes a very practical viewpoint that limits and clarifies how we approach electronic documents, particularly where other scholars wax philosophical or examine objects, like writing on dishes and embroider samplers, where the status as documents is questionable.
Write to me privately or on the listserve. I am anxious to hear what you all have to say. We have a neat opportunity to get on the academic radar screen at the international Ph.D. level.
Best wishes,
Carol
