<There suggestion was to sign up for a Service Company that constantly
monitors your credit activity and alerts you to every large purpose, and
any credit application in your name. >

Yet another way for a legitimate business to generate income. Charge
you to monitor illegal activity on your accounts.

I have read with concern, several articles regarding the lack of
security and privacy surrounding personal data going to overseas
operations. CIO magazine had an article a while ago about a documented
case of overseas company employees holding customer personal information
"hostage" for raises and better benefits. If no raises, the info gets
published to the web. I think this issue was discussed on this list a
while back. I remember stating then, that the privacy laws of the U.S.
are toothless overseas, unless the U.S. laws are amended to hold U.S.
companies responsible for the privacy (and any leakage) of personal
information regardless of where they send it to be processed or how they
process it. This should include handling of backup data - whether in
tape form or mirrored or redundant electronic form.
