To take a page from archives/archivists, we generally retain the publication
and
not the pre-publication drafts, since we consider the publication as the
permanent
record or policy. In the case of financial records however, I can see
where you might
have litigation problems if the publication differed from the
pre-publication draft. Our
university will routinely force printers to reprint something where the
draft was
correct but the printer typeset it wrong. I would think you should have a
short
retention period of pre-publication drafts and then discard.
