Judy,

There are 2 different flavours of Sharepoint:

1. WSS or Windows Sharepoint Services; and
2. SPS or Sharepoint Portal Services

WSS is a free bundle with every Windows 2003 server. SPS is a more powerful
(paid) portal application and search engine that uses WSS to deliver a
workgroup centric collaboration portal. A thorough run-down on the
differences can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;830320 and a more
digestable version here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/sharepoint/prodinfo/relationship.mspx
Probably the most important difference is that SPS makes the documents
stored in Team workspaces searchable.

Both WSS and SPS have reasonable document management capabilities
(significantly more than intranet content management) and are often sold (in
the case of SPS) just for that purpose. They include all the usual stuff
(versioning, check-in/out etc), but records management or the ability to
manage retention business rules, file plans and dispositions are not among
the capabilities.

Our company is about to start Beta Testing a free add-on to Sharepoint that
handles RM specific capabilities, so if you are interested in participating
in that Beta, please respond to me off list.

Cheers
David.

Subject: Microsoft Sharepoint 2003

Dear ListServ Members,

My company is using Microsoft Sharepoint 2003 for its internal web pages. I
would like to hear from any of you who are using Sharepoint
2003 with the Office 2003 Suite. My IT people are indicating that
Sharepoint can be used for electronic and hard copy document management (to
manage my retention schedule, documents, etc.). I am skeptical. I thought
Sharepoint was strictly for content management of the web page contents. I
ask that you enlighten me by responding directly to my e-mail address.
Thank you in advance for your replies.
