I'm not a member of ARMA, and I don't have a CRM. I am a member of the
RMAA (Records Management Assoc of Australasia), more specifically I'm a
professional member, which means I've got a mix of academic qualifications
and experience, and I maintain my status through a continuing professional
development system recently introduced.

Here in Australia I've never seen any job ad mention CRM, it's hard enough
to get them to say that membership of the RMAA is desirable, let alone
required. Which raises another issue. RMAA membership costs me a couple of
hundred dollars a year. Times are tight, I've got a mortgage, car lease,
kids at school, and a cat. I'd find it very difficult indeed to justify
the initial and ongoing cost of a CRM in addition to my MRMA, and given
that the RMAA provides both ARMA and CRM functionality in the one price,
and is far more visible locally, I'd certainly not consider abandoning the
RMAA in favour of ARMA and / or CRM.

Now don't all leap in and accuse me of saying a CRM isn't worth the cost,
I'm not saying that at all - far from it. It's worth every cent, and more.
I'm just comparing two similar products - the international ARMA and / or
CRM combination, and the local RMAA / MRMA equivalent.

And just to stir the locals up a bit, I'd like to see the MRMA
qualification include a mandatory academic degree component, with a sunset
clause to cater for those who came up through the ranks the hard way. One
day . . .

Cheers

Glenn

These views are mine alone. They may or may not be those of any
previous or present employers or clients. I don't know. If I'd asked
and they'd agreed, I would have signed it "Harry Peck and Co and
Glenn". Or whatever. But I haven't, so I didn't.
