We are extending our early registration fees for our upcoming workshop Nov. 3-5 that has been approved for 9 CRMP credits and 7 ACRS credits. Although the executive board has voted to waive the registration fees for Katrinia/Rita victims as space permits, they still need to register. The workshop details and costs are listed in the table below.

The Ark-La-Tex ARMA Chapter and the Louisiana Archivists and Manuscript Association are sponsoring a two-day workshop November 3-4 at Louisiana State University Shreveport. Thursday will be on fundamental records managementtechniquestaught by Cindy Smolovik, Sr. Archivist for NARA-SW Records Management Program. Friday is filled with several presentations in the archival field to improve our archival skill set: techniques for wears & tears and book repair; video interviews for oral history; tours of collections and archives at LSUS; presentations on professional certifications (CRM, CA, CDIA); rethinking, reformatting and getting finding aids on the web; and learning how to apply new processing guidelines to reduce backlogs. Friday speakers include Kathy and James Jackson, Carrie Fager, CRM, CDIA, SOS, Laura McLemore, Ph.d., CA, LSUS, Teresa Rice, MLIS, Bossier Parish Community College, Mike Strom, Archivist Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas, and Sailor Jackson, Jr., Assistant Director Louisiana Old State Capitol.

PRESENTERS:

CINDY SMOLOVIK, Sr. Archivist for NARA-SW (National Archives and Records Administration-Southwest Region) Records Management Program where she assists federal agencies with the appraisal of permanent and temporary records, the transfer of records to NARA-SW Records Center Program or Archives Operations, and trains federal and non-federal employees in federal recordkeeping practices.

Prior to coming to NARA, Cindy was the City Archivist for the City of Dallas, Texas from 1990 ? 1999, an Archivist for the Dallas Public Library from 1985-1990, and the Archivist for the Dallas Jewish Archives from 1984-1985.

Cindy holds a Masters degree in History from the University of Texas at Arlington which includes university certificate of archives and records administration. Cindy has been a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists since 1989 and a member of the Institute of Certified Records Managers since 2002.

Cindy has served in a variety of leadership roles including the current Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) Vice-President/President Elect, ACA Secretary 1996-2000, ACA Certification Maintenance Committee 1996-current, ACA Exam Development Committee 2002-current, NAGARA Professional Development Committee 2004-current, a variety of Program Committees and Task Forces for the Society of Southwest Archivists (SSA) and SSA Secretary from 1996-current. In 2003, Cindy was awarded the SSA Distinguished Service Award.

Kathy and James Jackson, own and operate Restor-A-Book located in Oil City, LA. Since 1999, this mom and son team has operated a bindery that specializes in binding, restoration of books, Bibles, and fine bindings. They have worked in the book binding business for over 30 years. In their session they will offer helpful "how-to" suggestions for repairing worn and torn books.

Teresa Riceis a MLIS graduate from LSU. She has recently assumed the post as instructor librarian - cataloger at Bossier Parish Community College. Prior to that, Teresa worked at LSUS Archives and Special Collections where she took on the project of designing and maintaining the web site for Archives. She continues to participate in this ongoing project.

Mike Strom currently works as an archivist at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Prior to that, he spent two and a half years at Yale University processing the papers of Yale Law School faculty and alumni. He has a master?s degree in History from Central Washington University and a master?s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin.

Sailor Jackson, Jr. is the Assistant Director of Louisiana?s Old State Capitol, Center for Political & Governmental History. He is also the Director of Film and Video for Louisiana?s Old State Capitol and Louisiana State Archives, both divisions of the Secretary of State. Previously, Sailor was a news photographer for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. His assignment was the political beat, meeting and interviewing numerous local, state and national figures on a wide range of topics.

Laura Lyons McLemore, Ph.D., CA is a Shreveport native, is Head of Archives and Special Collections at Louisiana State University-Shreveport, Louisiana, and teaches on-line courses in United States history at Grayson County College in Denison, Texas. McLemore began her academic career at Southern Methodist University, where she received degrees in Spanish and English. She completed her master?s degree in Linguistics at Texas A&M-Commerce and her PhD in History at the University of North Texas. Academically, she has specialized in nineteenth-century Texas historiography. Her book, Inventing Texas: Early Historians of the Lone Star State was published by Texas A&M University Press in 2004. She has written several articles and book reviews related to Texas history and archival practice.
Prior to coming to LSUS, Laura was college archivist at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, for seventeen years, where, as a ?Lone Arranger,? she developed and implemented a records management plan for college records. She has long been a member of the Society of American Archivists and the Society of Southwest Archivists, of which she was President in 1999. She became a Certified Archivist in 1991 and is currently Regent for Outreach for the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Carrie Fager, CRM, CDIAis currently employed by the Louisiana Secretary of State?s Office as the acting Records Management Officer Statewide. Before holding this position, she worked three years as a computer programmer in the Office?s Information Services Division, held the position of Micrographics Manager for the LA Office?s Division of Archives, Records Management and History, and worked three years for Republican Party of Louisiana as Assistance Finance Director, Administrative Director and finally as Chief of Staff.
Ms. Fager holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Louisiana State University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix-Louisiana Campus. She earned her CRM certification from the Institute of Certified Records Managers in July 1999 and her CDIA (Certified Document Imaging Architech) certification from CompTIA in December 2001.

Ms. Fager serves Region Manager for the 5-state Southwest Region of ARMA. She also serves as an officer and Webmaster of the Baton Rouge/Lafayette ARMA Chapter. Ms. Fager also serves as the Region?s Webmaster and has served on the International level on the Member Relations Committee as a member from 1999-2001, serving as Chairman in 2000-2001.
