<Our College has talked about expanding the certificate to
a two-year online associate degree program. Does the list
think there's any merit toward our pursuing that, or is a four-year
degree the only acceptable initial post-secondary educational degree?>
Our Police Department recently posted an opening for a "Records
Technician" at $12.08 - $16.88/hour. Job description included "process,
track and maintain records and files; data entry" plus provide clerical
support to department. Education requirement was high school minimum
with some clerical experience. (At $15/hour for a 40-hour week, that's
$31,200/year.)
As in any industry, there are needs for entry-level personnel right on
up through management-level personnel. Community colleges attract
different types of students than four-year
colleges -- students who simply aren't out for a four or five year
degree program because of family responsibilities, cost, or personal
goals, or students who want to save some tuition dollars by attending a
two-year program then transferring to a four-year school.
Further, as an employer, I would prefer hiring entry-level personnel
with some RIM coursework over someone without it (all other things being
equal). I would hope doing so would reduce some of my on-the-job
training investment.
A two-year program can fill certain needs of students and industry. I
absolutely feel that there is a place for this kind of program.

While a four-year degree is a worthy goal, I think any expansion of the
RIM offerings is good.
