Regarding academic classes in Records Management, may I please point out
an excellent resource - the University of Texas at Austin's School of
Information? This school offers graduate training in records management
along with archives, library science, etc. Their offerings include
several courses related to records management.

Here is a list of the courses available,
http://www.gslis.utexas.edu/courses/course_descriptions.php?OrderBy=Name
.

As part of my preparation for the CRM, I audited the course entitled
Introduction to Records Management. At that time, the course was taught
by Dr. Susan Cisco, CRM, FAI. That course is now being taught by Tad
Howington, CRM, CA, FAI. I think that both Susan and Tad represent the
highest level of RIM professionals AND they are both excellent teachers.

Perhaps there are other programs which also offer such excellent records
grounding. I have followed with interest the research being conducted
by Dr. Helen Tibbo at the School of Information and Library Science,
University of North Carolina relating to the the Managing the Digital
University Desktop Project http://ils.unc.edu/digitaldesktop. Are
there other projects of this type taking place that list serve members
may not have noticed?

On a personal note, I have found that my degree in English and Latin
have served me well in developing communication and classification
skills. My years as a systems analyst developed my knowledge of
technology and enhanced my appreciation for systems thinking. And my 4
years as a teacher in urban public schools prepared me for difficult
work situations. Along the way, I also learned that what you know must
be translated into something that someone wants and that sometimes
involves marketing. Somehow, I think that I couldn't have learned these
things except by my life's experiences, but my academic preparation also
provided an important element in preparing me as well.
