Sometimes, you can't wait to get invited, you have to invite yourself or
create opportunities to be invited or included. That's where networking
and the "grapevine" comes in. If you hear about something that you think
you should be involved in, call someone who you think might be involved
and chat with him/her. Collaboration doesn't always start off as
everyone being included from the beginning, although that is nice.
Sometimes people get involved along the way, and in the case of RIM,
hopefully, it's before people have gone too far down a path if it's not
a good one...

Also, that's where marketing comes in. You need to market not only your
program, but yourself at your company. People may not immediately see
the value of what either RIM or the records manager can ADD to a
project. You may soon have too many projects where you are requested to
provide input!

Opinions my own and not those of my employer.
