I agree with you Laurie, 1000%! If you didn't get an invitation to the party, you'd better be prepared to crash it! I can't tell you the number of times I have chatted with other RIM professionals, listening to their struggles and woes; and quite often, what it boils down to is either they aren't being invited to the party, or, they all of a sudden got invited to the party and have nothing appropriate to wear (read "not sure what to do next").

Market your program and yourself to get the invitation, but use terms and tactics that will demonstrate value from your audience's point of view - don't try to get them to value RM for the same reasons you do because they won't.

I have found a lot of success in my career because I am just as comfortable talking to my records clerks as I am the Chairman of our firm. The message is always the same, I just choose words and approaches that match the value propositions of the person I'm trying to sell to. My records clerks are driven more by emotion (pats on the back) and salary, while the Chairman values effectively managing risk and firm resources.

I think many of us are comfortable with our ability to manage staff, but are you sure you have the critical business skills to effectively present your concept to your peers and upper management? Are you prepared to create project plans, cost benefit analyses, soft-cost quantifications, etc? If not, you might consider boning up on those skills before you get your invitation in the mail!

Happy Friday to all!

Julie

Sometimes, you can't wait to get invited, you have to invite yourself or create opportunities to be invited or included. That's where networking and the "grapevine" comes in. If you hear about something that you think you should be involved in, call someone who you think might be involved and chat with him/her. Collaboration doesn't always start off as everyone being included from the beginning, although that is nice. Sometimes people get involved along the way, and in the case of RIM, hopefully, it's before people have gone too far down a path if it's not a good one...

Also, that's where marketing comes in. You need to market not only your program, but yourself at your company. People may not immediately see the value of what either RIM or the records manager can ADD to a project. You may soon have too many projects where you are requested to provide input!

Opinions my own and not those of my employer.
