I want to thank all the listserv colleagues who responded so quickly and
willingly to my request last Friday for information on fees charged by
state government records centers. With your help I was able to gather
enough data to respond to the short project deadline I was facing.

If anyone's interested, the basic findings of this quick survey are as
follows. We looked at fee structures for 20 state government records
center and microfilm/imaging operations (mostly focused on records
centers), from the listserv replies or states' web sites.

Of the 20, 7 states don't charge agencies anything for records center
services and provide them for free (funded by an appropriation).

Two of the 20 don't run their own records center, but have set up
contracts with private records storage companies for storing state
records.

Five of the 20 have a single per-box annual or monthly storage fee which
covers all the services provided by the records center to the agencies.

And 6 states have more detailed fee structures which couple a basic
storage charge with other fees for specific services performed.
