Since the List recently had an interesting discussion of email as a record, which I diverted towards the end with my historian musings, I thought I'd share this link about FEMA records. My point is not the content of the emails, or how Mike Brown handled his job -- those issues still are under review. Rather, I'm posting this because the story includes a link to the actual email messages. They illustrate something we all know already: the way email can provide a fragmentary glimpse, with a sense of immediacy, into how officials handle their duties; relations among subordinates and superiors, etc. You can read the CNN story for more context on how these came to be released.

See http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/03/brown.fema.emails/index.html
and the associated PDF file at http://www.melancon.house.gov/SupportingFiles/documents/Brown_Emails.pdf
