Thanks for the link Colin.

A few thoughts occurred to me while reading the article ...

The author writes:

<snip> "Granted, your company will likely not face this high-stakes litigation [Morgan Stanley], but a business lesson rippled across the world: Non-compliance is not an option. Archive e-mail messages, because you never know when you might need them." <snip>

I would argue that the last sentence is a bit short-sided. I might offer, "MANAGE e-mail messages in order to protect your organization from this kind of risk exposure.", and that part of "managing" email might be "archiving".

<snip> Why should you care about archiving? A report by the Enterprise Strategy Group found that as much as 75 per cent of a company's intellectual property is contained in e-mail messages and attachments. <snip>

All the more reason to MANAGE, not just archive.

<snip> "Businesses should assume their e-mail will one day need to appear," <snip>

Egad - are we talking about ALL email again? Please say it isn't so! That is one assumption I hope I never make!

<snip> Today's swamp of e-mails means indexing is crucial to fully enjoying the benefits of an archive. <snip>

Hmmm, now we're talking ... Indexing is a good idea. But we're still missing something ... Ah yes, the appraisal process! Should we index ALL email? Personally, I think not.

<snip> What if a customer complained she never received an e-mailed receipt from a purchase order? A prepared business would have archived that e-mail, created a data tag to identify the sender and recipient and performed a context-based analysis of that message. <snip>

I'm starting to wonder if perhaps something has been lost in translation from Canadian to American ... Is he saying the same thing I am? Again, personally, I'd swap "archived" with "managed", and swap "context-based" with "content-based" ...

Just some broad-stroke thoughts on a BEAUTIFUL Thursday afternoon in Hotlanta!

Julie
