Just my two cents as a p/t student obtaining my master's degree in
counseling. The Meyers-Briggs tool is a great way to get a sense of one's
world view and approach and how others may approach the world differently,
but as Maarja pointed out, it is not hard and fast. Some people can take it
at different times in their lives and score differently thus coming out a
different type depending on their developmental stage and their environment.
Of course, work styles and home styles often do differ markedly because the
environments are often very different and demand different skills and
approaches. If you can imagine that each of the indicators, extrovert vs.
introvert, for example, is on a continuum then you can see how some people
score purely at one end or another but most of us are somewhere closer to
center and therefore can draw from either end of the continuum as required.
I've taken the instrument 3 times over the years and I have scored as an
ENFP each time -- an extrovert, but I am closer to the center than the
extreme end, and people who know me well understand my extroversion is
centered around my love of collaboration with others and my strong need to
advocate for the things I believe in but in fact I am quite a shy person
(there are several people cracking up right now, but it really is true) and
crave and enjoy my solitude equally as well. So, the Myers-Briggs is a
starting point to begin to understand your interests and approaches, but we
are complex creatures for sure.
