Lorinda,

Our chapter in CNY did some of this a few years back, and I did also as an
individual. What I offered to small not-for-profits was a very basic records
management workshop and made recommendations on how to have all staff
participate in RIM since in such small organizations you are not going to
get a dedicated staff person to do records work. I talked about both paper
and electronic records management down to basic things such as naming
conventions, creating directories vs. having everything under 'My Documents'
and storing disaster recovery backups off-site or at least away from PCs. I
also suggested collaborative efforts between agencies in developing
retention schedules and for off-site vital records storage and preservation.
Any of your board members could do such a workshop. We also relied on the
state archives for a few presentations as well. I am sorry to say I have not
retained my slides for the presentation as I tire of them after a while and
discard them.

Not to take away from Jesse's suggestion, but I recommend a practitioner
deliver this type of workshop rather than a vendor, because the solutions
will oftentimes be quite simple and at little or no cost. You have to go to
where they are and start small.
