In the current NAID Newsletter they posted this article:

"Institutions and companies who are victims of hacking attacks due to
poor data security policies should be penalized, suggests a report from
the new Congressional Research Service (CRS). The report, titled
"Terrorist Capabilities for Cyberattack," also suggests mandating that
computer product vendors immediately report all serious vulnerabilities
to the Homeland Security Department (DHS) as well as any
vulnerabilities that have already been exploited. The report warns that
increased physical security measures are forcing terrorists to recruit
people with computer, engineering, and mathematics skills in order to
get past the current protections. The report points to an IBM study
showing a 50 percent increase of hacking incidents so far this year,
with most attacks focusing on federal agencies and U.S. enterprises.
The CRS also urges an increase in cooperation among international
experts as well as a focus on strengthening organizations and
enterprises against cyberterrorism."

This might be an idea to open a dialog between records management about
IT about how IT and records management can collaborate in safeguarding
the organization.

I also wonder if anyone actually talked with IT about encryption after
I posted on that topic. Did anyone query IT's about their position
about converting to encryption? Or has there been any interest in
management in having records management become involved in encrypting
records under your control.

As the article above states, there will be pressure on corporations and
government agencies to develop increased security measures to protect
records. Is the records manager being asked to participate in these
strategic planning meetings?

The ARMA EStorage Task Force is developing a guideline on this, does
anyone see any momentum for this issue in your organization? Several
members of the Listserv are on that Task Force so it would be good to
know if there is any momentum developing within the various
organizations served by RM's on this Listserv?
