Here's the story of the demise of one of those attempts.  Back in 1999
(you know, a really long time ago), Wired ran the story of the end of
Chiat/Day's experiment with the paperless/deskless office:

I particularly loved the part about employees using their cars as filing
cabinets (page 4).
