PROGRAM
"Future Trends in Data Protection"
Hugh Smith
Firelock
Kutztown, PA
From the impact of Sarbanes Oxley, to the expected liability exposures of Identity Theft legislation, IT Managers, Records Managers and Offsite Storage providers are being asked to handle vital information assets in a much more secure manner. Uncertainty about how much is enough is driving organizations to embrace technology with no proven track record. Fragile computer media and blade servers are just two examples of where the IT Industry has lost connection to the needs of records management.

How does a Records Manager gain control over this run away train? Are there simple measures that can be overlaid on the current programs to enhance security? Fines and threats of criminal punishment have gained the attention of executive management, but how does the records manager position themselves to best protect their organization?

In the past, Records Management has been as welcome in data centers as Summer Squash in September, but....Surprise!....IT is looking for help. If you can demonstrate a grasp of technology, they might just welcome your ideas on protecting archival media.

Hugh Smith is Vice President of Marketing for FIRELOCK, the world's leading manufacturer of Modular Fireproof Media Storage Vaults. Hugh has designed and installed more vital records vaults for corporate America than anyone in the industry. His installations include some of the most secure and unique vaults in the world. Literally hundreds of billions of assets reside in FIRELOCK secured facilities and vaults. He has worked with clients such as Walt Disney Imagineering, DOCUSAFE, the U.S. Department of Energy, and hundreds of financial institutions around the world.

Hugh helped establish the first nationwide network of media vault storage vendors specializing in the protection and security of computer media. This network in 60 major cities provides cutting edge security for offsite media that serves as back-up to the Fortune 1000 companies. He has also developed a prototype of Server Vaults that is spreading across the country, providing protection for proprietary server and computer environments.
