Julie, I think that if the records management principles you refer to
are related to accountability, protection of citizen rights, maintenance
of historic memory, and transparency, then I agree. These aren't
necessarily suffering from too much of a business focus - generally
systems which meet these challenges also meet long term business needs.
However, a short term bottom line focus can dilute such principles,
often to the longer term detriment of the organization.

From my own experience, any time a county agency has severely cut
records as no longer critical to their business focus, they have
suffered long term consequences. Business focus is a very subjective
term, and with the kinds of skills you noted in your e-mail - building a
business plan, managing expectations, etc... we can be part of that
focus.
