Steve:
A clarification: The call is for consultants "who have expertise in
local government archives" -- as in local government records
repositories (and "archives"). It is not a call only for "archivists."
Since many of our records are permanent in nature, the term "archives"
may have subtly different connotations in our industry than in some
other fields. RM professionals should certainly look at and consider
the Call for Consultants.

Project
I'm confused. In both of Vickie's email messages they're looking for
archivists to help set-up a program to save long-term historical records
for local government. Why no Records Management people involved in the
process . It they were to set-up a good RIM program with the right
schedules,technology etc wouldn't the archival of the historical records
just be another migration or storage move to the State archives. Waiting

Seeking consultants for CoSA Local Government Archives Project
The Council of State Archivists is seeking three consultants for its
NHPRC-grant funded project, "Closest to Home: Archival Programs for
Local Government Records." Additional information about the project is
available
at http://www.statearchivists.org/lga/.
Consultants will be selected by the project's Task Force which is
co-chaired
by Kaye Lanning Minchew, Troup County (GA) Archives, and Roy Tryon,
South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
The first meeting of the Task Force will be March 10-12 at which time it
will finalize a set of key issues that warrant in-depth exploration by
the three project consultants. Issues already under consideration
include: . Addressing the challenge of managing and preserving
electronic records;
. Ensuring that imaging systems and other technological solutions to
storage
and access during the active life of records incorporate appropriate
safeguards for records requiring long-term retention;
. Establishing funding mechanisms to support preservation of and access
to local government records of long-term value;
. Providing appropriate education and training for local government
officials who create and care for these records during their active life
and
for the archivists who manage their long-term preservation;
. Evaluating the impact of programs and policies instituted at the
federal and state levels that affect the creation, use, and retention of
local government records;
. Ensuring that users of all kinds have ready access to local government
archives.
The Task Force will refine this list during its initial deliberations
and may identify additional issues during this process.
We invite individuals who have expertise in local government archives
and are interested in being considered to serve as one of the project's
three consultants to review the detailed "Call for Consultants" at
http://www.statearchivists.org/lga/call_consultants.htm and then submit
a letter of interest as outlined in the "How to respond" section at the
end
of
the document.
If you have questions about the project, please feel free to contact
either
of the Task Force co-chairs or CoSA staff:
