923 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD View Map When: Thursday, February 9, 6:00pm Phone: 301-585-1700 "Electronic Records: Preserving Meaning, Not Just Bits" -- A Look at Some of the Risks and Challenges of NARA's Electronic Records Archives (ERA)

Speaker: Rick Rogers, CEO, Fenestra Technologies Corp.

Schedule: Networking - 6:00pm, Dinner - 6:30pm, Presentation - 7:30pm

Program Description: Electronic records are represented in data file formats that become inaccessible over time. These data file formats, in turn, depend on access software that becomes obsolete over time. Long-term preservation of electronic records involves more than just preserving the bits in the data files--it involves preserving meaning. Electronic records preservation strategies must face this challenge, or else risk forever losing the meaning of the records of the Digital Age.

As founder and CEO of Fenestra Technologies Corporation, Rick Rogers is the visionary behind Fenestra's work with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the U.S. Bureau of the Census. As a subcontractor to Lockheed Martin (the prime contractor for NARA's ERA), he is helping to design a system to authentically preserve and provide access to any kind of electronic record, free from dependency on any specific hardware or software. Since 1992, he and his team of software developers have helped digitize the Economic Directorate of the U.S. Bureau of Census through the design, deployment and enhancements of the Generalized Instrument Design System (GIDS). Rick also served as team leader for the federal CIO Council's "E-Forms for E-Gov" pilot project in 2003, whereby key recommendations were incorporated into the Small Business Administration's Business Gateway initiative.
