US Supreme Court Rule:

Rule 33. Document Preparation: Booklet Format; 8 1/2-
         by 11-Inch Paper Format

1. Booklet Format: (a) Except for a document expressly
permitted by these Rules to be submitted on 8 1/2- by 11-inch
paper, see, e. g., Rules 21, 22, and 39, every document filed
with the Court shall be prepared in a 6 1/8- by 9 1/4-inch booklet
format using a standard typesetting process (e. g., hot metal,
photocomposition, or computer typesetting) to produce text
printed in typographic (as opposed to typewriter) characters.
The process used must produce a clear, black image on white
paper. The text must be reproduced with a clarity that
equals or exceeds the output of a laser printer.

There are probably other exceptions, but I knew about the one above.

Also, remember that paper records produced from information technology
systems will not always reproduce to 8 1/2" x 11" forms and present
additional challenges (in legal as well as storage terms). "Performance
Guidelines for the Legal Acceptance of Public Records":

Subject: [RM] paper size

This may have been discussed before, but I couldn't locate any threads
on it.

The issue is standardizing on Letter size from Legal [or any other size
for that matter including ISO standard sizes]

I understand there is a movement afoot in the US to eliminate the Legal
size document [paper]. We seem to be behind here in Canada but I'm
investigating this issue because I have an opportunity to create a new
records programs down to a brand new centralized records room with new
shelving. The questions are as follows:

1. are there any legal requirements that certain documents must be in a
size other than Letter?

2. are there any case studies available that point to a ROI on
converting or standardizing into Letter size?

3. is it too dangerous to invest in a letter sized mobile shelving or
should we invest in the flexibility of Legal sized shelving with the
appropriate add-ons to manage Letter end tab folders?

4. do you have any examples of policies or directives in the corporate
world that tackle this issue?
