PDFs can be OCR-ed, which means the text can become searchable whilst
retaining the underlaying "scanned" image of your record, which would be a
requirement for records management integrity/authenticity purposes.

Both PDF and now PDF/A and TIFF are accepted preservation formats as far as
I'm aware. It would really depend on what document management systems you
are migrating the documents into. How will you be viewing the digital
files? Eg. What viewer will you be using for Tiffs and what viewer for
PDFs?

Would be interesting indeed to see if thereis any documentation out there on
comparison between the two formats, eg. Pros/cons.

We have been scanning documents for the past 3 years as TIFFs, but because
of an issue of OCRing a document with color and B&W pages we are now
considering scanning to PDF. What is the conventional wisdom on TIFF vs
PDFs? Is one more stable, better resolution, better at migrating to newer
releases, etc. I have heard mixed reviews with no clear "winner" on which
is the preferred format. Your advice is most appreciated! Thanks to all of
you who responded to "how far is far enough" too!
