If you really want to hurt the gas companies and/or send a message to the auto
manufacturers you have to reduce the demand, not shift it elsewhere.  If you
could get a enough people to trade in their SUVs for SmartCars or bicycles,
that might work, but I don't see that happening on a large scale.

But what if enough people stopped buying "NEW" automobiles, and bought
"used" ones instead...until the manufacturers sped up the process of tech
advancement to totally non-gasoline vehicles.  What if this happened
dramatically over the next 4-5 years?  Hmmmmmm.....
