And here is a comparison between ODF and Microsoft's Office Open XML format.

The gist is that both formats use XML to describe their contents and
metadata, moving us one step closer to a more meaningful approach to digital
preservation for office-type documents. 
 
This might also be a good "late-breaking" topic for, say, ARMA 2006 in San
Antonio, etc.
