Yes...the machine and its owner have been around a long time. 8-) This
thread emphasizes our need as RIM practitioners to be included in
hardware and media purchase decisions. Buying a fax machine does not
seem like a RIM issue, until one encounters this type of situation -
what to do with difficult to destroy carbons of confidential material.
We encounter similar issues with folks using the "new" media du jour (5
1/4 floppies come to mind) then hanging on to the media as the source of
a record without considering technology obsolescence or migration
issues. This is even more prevalent in media our organizations accept
from external sources. This is a bone of contention with our
Engineering Dept. here at the utility. They do not believe they have
the right to "dictate" the type of media or the software used to
electronically submit developer records. Then we are stuck with records
we cannot access either immediately or after a period of time. The new
data rights management capabilities of some MS software is also
contributing to this confusion. External sources generate e-mail and
some documentation using the data rights management functions and we end
up with "disappearing" or "unable to copy or print" records.

Wow, that is an old machine Ginny. My apologies as I was thinking about
an old carbon machine I had used before.

If it is the same brand of fax machine I use, then the carbons are not
detached from the rolls. The carbons roll up from the unused roll to
the used roll as the faxes are received and result in one continuous
roll of carbon copies when the carbon roll is exhausted. Bob - can you
clarify?

The cardboard rolls shouldn't be considered, in this case. The subject
was originally about printed faxes which will have been removed from the
rolls.

The problem with this particular type of carbon is that it is rolled up
onto a very thick, very solid (almost solidified) cardboard core which
binds in shredder blades and often breaks or seriously damages them. (I
have had intimate experience with this type of fax machine, not all of
it good.) In general, Janie is correct that carbon paper is not
recyclable and many commercial shredding firms will not take it for that
reason. I also agree with the many that suggested a change of hardware
should be considered by your client. But meanwhile, they do have to
deal with the carbons already generated.
