Dear Colleagues,

There has been a discussion here in the Deep Deep South regarding
Microsoft's recent activity regarding RIM or as they see it ECM.

Here is a response I posted to the RMAA List earlier today which may be of
interest to those outside of the Australasia area.

I trust you find the ECM paper I refer to of interest and also of value.

Regards, Laurie

Dear Colleagues,

Microsoft and Records Management were in the past two words you would not
put in the same context except to say it was all Microsoft's fault that
Records Management was in such disarray in the capture of electronic records
due to the release of the MS DOS operating system software back in 1981
along with the IBM and Compatible PC's in the same year.

Today I see the Cavalry arriving on the RIM scene in a big way and heading
the charge is Colonel William Henry [Bill] Gates III.

Make no bones about it and I agree with Chris Hurley and
notthenationalarchives John that the world of Records Management is about to
hit the BIG TIME!

WHY!

If you read all the postings on the MS Blog on RM @
http://blogs.msdn.com/recman/default.aspx one of the things they highlight
is DOLLARS and I mean big $ numbers e.g. $2.8 Billion Dollars!

The MS blog states:

No, I'm not quoting the Austin Power's villain Dr. Evil. I'm sharing a
pretty surprising figure: This is the 2007 projected budget for electronic
discovery services within the US. You might think I'm joking, but this is
real data from the 2005 Socha-Gelbmann Electronic Discovery Survey. "How the
heck can it cost that much?" you might ask. There are a lot of reasons, but
fundamentally it's related to one simple problem: we keep too much stuff!

And this is why Colonel William Henry [Bill] Gates III and his cavalry are
interested BIG TIME in RIM. But they call it ECM - Enterprise Content
Management a term created by AIIM in 2003 which has now become ubiquitous.

To obtain an understanding of where MS are going with ECM have a look at the
2005 White Paper located @
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/ecmwhitepaper.mspx and keep an eye
on their blog site as more is to be unveiled.

Reading this document will assure you that MS is deadly serious in making
RIM or is that ECM a money spinner with the release of Office 2007.

As I have said before and I quote - Today is the most exciting time to be
involved in this the most critical of resources the FOURTH Factor in the
Factors of production - INFORMATION.

Why not join the MS wave with Colonel William Henry Gates III, hang five and
get relaxed as this new phase for RIM will consume all of us, for good or
evil!

Regards, Laurie
