Auditors do have a critical role to play. A close tie-in with Auditing,
particularly when they perform functional audits, puts RM on distribution of
audit reports when the audit subject addresses compliance with retention
programs, vital records programs and the like.

In many organizations, the records manager also serves as the company
historian. In government operations it takes on a special value, of course. I
recall while with the State of New Jersey (many moons ago but may still be true)
the records management committee consisted of the State Archivist, the Attorney
General, Controller, State Auditor, and the records supervisor.

There is no question but that the Archivist must play a key approval role.

One of the best reports out of Australia was an auditors report covering
departmental compliance with ISO15489.
