I too whole heartedly agree that one of the big issues is retention and disposition. We have to protect and preserve our corporate memory and history. We are also legally obligated to preserve certain records as well. My concern is that technology is moving faster then we can keep up and for every new technology there is a company banging on our door trying to sell us something better. Just look at the changes in our industry in the past decade for goodness sake! We have had to continually re-educate ourselves over and over. However, with that being said, I still believe that the fundamentals of records management still remain the same, managing records from their creation until final disposition.

I am not that naive "or old" yet, to believe that paper is better then electronic records management. I just believe that they both will have to coexist.

We here use a 7 stage methodology called Records and Information Life Cycle Management. You may find this interesting to read.
