I suspect this is an issue of remembering the interface and not about
content. I too have old receipts from my mother who kept them. People
criticized her for being a pack-rat and keeping junk. Yet, as I look
through those receipts, I touch and feel the same paper she touched and
felt as they were going through hard times.

Similar experiences can be felt when walking through an archeological
site, except these people are many generations removed.

One day, our children will look fondly at the old 2D screen, touch the
clattering keyboard, and experience the smell of electronics warming up
as they view old TIFFs of images and homework they did now.

In these cases, it will be "the interface [that] is the message.

Russell, I agree when they're trying to get the tactile/sensory point
across, for example in a novel, and are making a conscious effort to do
so.
Not so with grandma's letters - you truly feel/sense the memories from
the handwriting, sensory environment that the letter was written. Just
went through the same exercise with some old stuff from my mother-in-law

and there was nothing about the conscious writing style that brought the

flood of memories . It was the touch, feel, smell of handling the
material
and the personal handwriting.
