Wow are we on the Records Management Listserv? This shows you the
progress the List has made in mind set.

In my first year on the List I wrote something about the trend towards
less paper and was lambasted. Zoweee! I am blown away.

But how you store media is even more important than paper.

But here is a fun fact. I recently took some reel to reel sound
recordings my Dad made on a cheap recorder to an audio lab and had them
all converted to CD's as I had nothing that could still play the reel
to reel. ( Ah migration problems, one note on the issue of going
electronic. Plan for migration.) One of these recordings was made in
1967 ( 39 years ago) and my Dad had recorded my and my brother's
birthday party.

My kids had never heard my Dad's voice. My nephew had never heard the
voice of his Dad, as he died while his mother was still pregnant. My
kids got a lot of enjoyment out of hearing these recordings. The
downside is they thought I sounded funny, or dumb depending on which of
my kids was making fun of me. Hey I was only a freshman in college, I
was dumb.

But this session showed me the real value of memorabilia. It was great
and it reminded me what I like best about what I do. I preserve the
past and it is truly an honor to do it sometimes.

Goodnight Pat, I going home now.
