First, what Tom said.

Second, and this question has come up tangentially before, here's my take on
the courses - with of course the caveat that as an instructor, I have a
personal stake in whether people take them or not. :)

The AIIM ERM (and ECM) Certificate Programs really consist of a number of
moving parts:

Strategy - identifies the key business drivers and strategies for addressing
them
Practitioner - basic records and electronic records concepts, records
lifecyle
Specialist - assumes basic records knowledge and outlines the process for
implementing a records program including people/roles, processes, *and*
technologies. Lots of project management in this workshop
Master - includes all of the above plus an in-class case study.

Strategy is completely standalone, with no exam and no credentials
associated. The other courses have an exam and designation; the Master
covers Strategy, Practitioner, and Specialist plus an in-class case study.
In order to get the ERM Master credential, you need to pass the Master exam
plus submit a home case study.

So to answer the specific question you asked, there is no prerequisite to
attend the class and sit for the relevant exam; I recommend the Practitioner
(only) for people who are new to the field as there isn't enough time in a
4- or 5-day class to assimilate the concepts before moving on to the
processes. For a practicing records manager with a few years under their
belt, they may get some nuggets from the Practitioner but it's the
Specialist and case that will really be of value to them. So they would
probably benefit from the Master Class more than someone more junior.

Or more senior. If you are a CRM, PMP, CDIA+, and a dozen other credentials
behind your name, you may not benefit as much from the ERM Master Class. For
those folks, I'd recommend the ECM Practitioner (only, as the Specialist is
very similar), or CDIA+, or some other more advanced/focused training in
electronic records, project management, writing RFPs, etc. And of course
watch this space as I will be releasing an advanced electronic records
management course this fall (email, instant messaging, some other
technologies and process issues).

I will also point out that one of our instructors is also a newly-minted
CRM; I'd like to congratulate Barb Blackburn, CRM, ERMM on her achievements.
All of our instructors are ERM Masters or candidates, and we now count two
CRMs (Charmaine Brooks, CRM as well) and several folks in varying stages of
the CRM process.

Last point - this is NOT meant to compete with the CRM for a number of
reasons: there is no experiential requirement, there is presently no
continuing education requirement, and while there is an exam and case study,
they are not as rigorous today as what you will face on the CRM. The case
study, in particular, is done at home and is not proctored. It's still
challenging, but it is not the CRM.

I hope this information is of value; if you have any additional questions
about costs, venues, or the courses themselves please contact me directly.

Subject: RE: [RM] Updated list of IMERGE workshops

Is there any information about the amount of experience, or level of
competence desirable to be able to take the records management master class,
and successfully sit for the exam thereafter?
Thanks in advance.
