One suggestion I would NOT make is to try to store the hanging folders themselves in a standard storage box. The metal hangers won't fit in the box and trying to take them out of the folders is next to impossible. We found ourselves in this situation while inventorying and re-boxing inactive records in an offsite storage area. The folders had tab labels on them we didn't want to lose. We didn't have the supplies with us to actually make and label new folders.

I now carry a small pocket knife with me. (My employee badge gets me around building security.) Next time I'll just cut the hangers out. But using regular folders inside the hanging folders in the first place, as others have suggested, would make things a lot simpler.
