Steve/RIM colleague:

Based on the places I've worked and consulted for, here are my experiences:

Local government - Historic Group (including museums, historic sites,
archeology, and cultural issues) - fairly good fit as the Records Manager
also runs the Archives. Still resides there to date. As things get more
electronic a good relationship with IT helps

Federal Government Agency - Moved from Facilities to CIO group in the late
90s where it resides today. Good fit.

Federal Agency (big on IT/Electronic records management) - CIO group. Good
fit.

Securities Regulatory Organization - Corporate Real Estate/Facilities
Management. Works well as the RIM group deals with a large amount of
physical records. Great support from above and a good relationship with IT
on the electronic records management issues.

Global consulting firm - Risk/Compliance. Works well.

Overall it depends on the support you receive from above and the
relationships you build with the stakeholders in the process.

Subject: [RM] RIM Organizational Placement

A RIM colleague who does not subscribe would like to pose the following
question:

<snip>
I am interested in where the Records Management group resides in other
organizations and whether or not you feel this is a good fit for this
group. (i.e. Legal, IS, Compliance, etc.) If you feel you reside
under the best area, please provide the reasons why you feel it is a
good fit.  If it
does not appear to be the best area to reside, please provide the
reasons why it is not a good fit. What would be considered the best fit
for the RIM
group?

Any information would be appreciated.
<snip>

Best regards, Steve
