 <http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=733152599196>This message is being
passed along from a SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) Task
Force that I participate in. I would STRONGLY SUGGEST that those in
environments required to store information assets for periods of 25 years or
longer in the scope of their responsibilities consider participating in this
survey.

Failure to participate in this survey may mean that in the long run, you
will be subject to accepting the input of others becoming the "desired
alternative" the industry designs their hardware and software to address. I
can tell you from experience, VERY FEW RECORDS MANAGERS are providing any
input to SNIA, and if they choose not to, their needs and requirements will
not be heard.

Apologies in advance for the duplicates some of you may receive on this, as
I have sent it to multiple Listservs and a number of individuals by BCC that
I felt may be materially impacted by this effort.

Larry

SUBJECT: Request for your participation in the SNIA's "Long-Term Digital
Information Retention Requirements" Survey
Now is your opportunity to gain insight and influence a key industry project
called the "100 Year Archive Task Force" sponsored by the Storage Networking
Industry Association (SNIA).

The SNIA's 100 Year Archive Task Force is a global, multi-agency group
working to define the business & IT requirements for long term digital
information retention. The definition of long term varies significantly by
company but, from a technology standpoint, current practices are severely
challenged when it comes to retaining information for over 10-20 years. And,
we have little ability to insure that we will be able to read and use
information in 50-100 years.

Physical and logical readability barriers must be overcome. It is not as
simple as XML or PDF-A. This complex problem needs a foundation and that is
the purpose of this study. What are the business requirements today for
long-term information retention? How will they change over time? What is
needed from storage technology and practices to accommodate those
requirements? Current standards fall short in these areas. Defining
long-term storage retention and readability practices can not be done
without a better understanding of your requirements.

If you are in IT, RIM, Information Security, or a business role with concern
over long term information retention and digital archives , please help by
taking the anonymous online survey.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=733152599196.<http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=733152599196>We
also request that you circulate this request to your business, RIM,
and
IT peers. We need insight from people in all these roles. You will receive
the compiled results of this study as our way of thanking you for your
participation. You can register to receive the results and read about the
100 Year Archive Task Force and its objectives at www.snia-dmf.org/100yr .

Thank you for helping us develop best practices that will better address the
challenges of long term information retention.

Best regards,
Michael Peterson
