Here are three definitions I found. The second is from the US Government
and the third is from the ISO.

Disposition - A final administrative action taken with regard to records,
including destruction, transfer to another entity, or permanent
preservation.

DISPOSITION
(1) The actions taken regarding records no longer needed for current
Government business. These actions include transfer to agency storage
facilities or Federal records centers, transfer from one Federal agency to
another, transfer of permanent records to the National Archives, and
disposal of temporary records. Disposition is the third stage of the records
life cycle. See also DISPOSAL (1), FINAL DISPOSITION, LIFE CYCLE OF RECORDS,
RETENTION PERIOD, RETIREMENT, SCHEDULED RECORDS, SCHEDULING, TRANSFER,
UNSCHEDULED RECORDS.
(2) The actions taken regarding nonrecord materials when no longer needed,
including screening and destruction. See also DISPOSITION INSTRUCTIONS (2),
SCHEDULING.

disposition
range of processes associated with implementing records retention,
destruction or transfer decisions which are
documented in disposition authorities or other instruments
--------
In some cases disposition instructions may also include interim steps such
as retain in office/on-site for x years after cutoff, send to off-site
storage for y years, followed by a "Final" disposition, such as destroy,
retain permanently, send to archives, transfer to ...

Hope this helps.

Subject: [RM] 'disposition' question

Dear List,

Sorry for bother with such an ordinary question, but I'm not an English
native archivist speaker :), and I have a problem of understanding a term.
"Disposition" means anything that is done with a record after it ceased
being active or it refers only to the action taken after the retention
period?

For not overloading the List with such a stuff, please answer to private
e-mail.

Many thanks,

Bogdan-Florin POPOVICI, Ph.D.
