I do not believe in many or all cases, that it is fear of retribution (from
employers?) but for a variety of reasons, including:

-agreements with/restrictions imposed by employers/clients (one of my
previous employers had restrictions on postings from corporate accounts
unless cleared by the PR/Communications Department)

-access (some list members who can't access work (or any - noted Jackie)
accounts from other locations still want to read/respond when not at work -
and yes I know there are alternative ways other than via e-mail to access
all of the features of the list)

-privacy/does it matter who I work for? (If I think it germane to the topic
I will include general context about my employment current/past in a
posting. Anyone who has a true need to know who I work(ed) for, or where I
work(ed) already knows, or I can provide that information in a less public
forum - Right Jackie?)

Many ARMA (and similar professional association) Officers and Committee
Chairs/Members do not note their positions unless it is absolutely necessary
and germane so to avoid confusion of personal opinion and an organizations
position on issues

Beyond that I'm know for a fact that it is not hard to find out additional
information about many list members via a simple Google (or similar tool)
search.

It is interesting to see the number of members on this list serve who do
not use their work e-mail accounts for fear of retribution.

How is it true that "it seems we still live in a highly undemocratic
society where the free exchange of ideas is not honored," to quote
marionsumerianlibrarian?

If that were so, no one on this list would be able to respond freely to
anyone's opinions and that simply is not true. The free exchange of
ideas allows us to both agree and disagree with others without fear of
retribution.
