I can't speak for all states, but in Mississippi the courthouse doesn't record wills except through probate AFTER the party has died.  In Laura's case, that person HAD died.  At that point the original will would be kept in the court file at the courthouse, no longer in the law firm's possession.  As far as copies and electronic records, you should check with your state to see what is admissible in court for probate.
