Metadata Cataloger

Department/Division:

Definition:
The Metadata Cataloger provides creative leadership and expertise in developing and maintaining metadata to effectively provide access to the digital resources captured in the Secretary of State’s Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative (MDHI), covering all subjects and languages according to nationally recognized standards.  

Job Functions and General Responsibilities:
● Serves as a primary resource person for the MDHI project on cataloging rules and local practice and in other areas of subject and language expertise, solving complex bibliographic and procedural problems; 

● Provides significant input on relevant policies and procedures; 

● Provides leadership in evaluation and application of current and emerging metadata standards;

● Provides metadata and metadata guidelines for digital collections using the Dublin Core format for digital objects; 

● Collaborates with other librarians and archival staff and colleagues in other institutions to evaluate and apply appropriate metadata schemas for digital collections held by the Secretary of States office and participating institutions; 

● Provides leadership in the development of standards, policies, and procedures for digital resources. 

Qualifications:
A master’s degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent degree is preferred; undergraduate degree and professional experience in the areas of collection and digitization may be substituted for the master’s degree; knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, USMARC formats, integrated library system software, and OCLC Connexion; knowledge of digital asset management systems, such as CONTENTdm; experience with one or more of the following standards: EAD, Dublin Core, XML, OAI, METS, VRACore and PBCore; strong technical skills and problem-solving abilities; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; strong commitment to excellent service and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with a wide variety of library staff and users.

Preferred: Two years experience with initiatives to provide access to digital resources; coursework or experience in archival administration, historical administration, or history; knowledge of sources, methods, and techniques used in historical research; experience with text encoding and analysis.  Some work experience with or in a cultural heritage institution; reading knowledge of Spanish, French, or German is helpful.
