Good afternoon,

I have several file cabinets filled with old microfilm reels.
Unfortunately, some of the reels are begining to deteriorate and are
giving off the tell-tale vinegar smell. Before spending money on
preserving these I wanted to ensure the records are identified so that I
can determine their retention and learn if they even need be kept or can
be destroyed according to our schedule. The reels were inherited from
various locations and departments so I don't have an index or reference of
what they are other than some vague details on some of the reel boxes.
Half of the reels are 16mm polyester based which I have equipment for and
can view in-house. The other half are 35mm acetate based reels which I
dont have any imaging equipment for. I got a price to rent a 35mm film
imager but it was very expensive. It looks like my other option is having
an outside company scan some sample documents from each reel to disc for
me so I can get a better idea of their record series. Has anyone worked on
projects like this in the past? Are there any other ideas I missed which
would help me learn what types of documents are on the reels? Can anyone
recommend a vendor in the NY / NJ area who would be able to assist with
something like this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
S Beim
