I think in our case, in our insurance policy, the cap on any claims within a
one-year and five-year period was so low (last I checked), and our quantity
of stuff so high that we'd only recoup enough to replace the physical media
anyway - there'd be no point in haggling over the costs to recreate
intellectual content. So I couldn't really use the insurance coverage as an
argument to the IT department for them to better index their stuff.

Has anyone been in the position of having to prove to the insurer that the
replacement value could be estimated - in other words to defend the
replacment cost estimate by defending the quality of the indexing of
the data that was lost?
