Well, average 20-lb bond office paper weighs 20 lb for a 500-sheet ream of
uncut basis size (17x22). For office packaging, those basis sheets are cut
into 4 8.5x11 sheets, meaning the weight per ream is 5 lbs.

The figures for how many pages fit in a box are all over the map - this list
has seen figures from 1,500 to 3,000 if I recall correctly depending on,
among many other variables, how packed the box is, whether folders are used,
and even the condition of the pages (crisp printed and filed pages will take
up less space and be able to be packed more densely than folded, spindled,
and crumpled ones). That page count would give you a weight of 15-30 lbs,
plus maybe another couple lbs for the box itself, binders, binder clips,
etc.

So to answer the question, no, I don't think there is a standard average
weight. Your weighing your own boxes is probably the best bet; failing that,
you could fall back on the old saw that is still present in too many
otherwise fairly senior job descriptions: "ability to lift 35 lbs".

Cheers,
