"M-DISC is a perfect storage solution for music, photos, videos, genealogical
records, business records, data loss prevention, permanent file backup,
medical imaging, government usage, and for archival purposes."
This is a positive step forward in long-term storage of digital data, but it's a
stretch to call it "a perfect storage solution." If the claims hold up it's a step
in the right direction, but:
- It only addresses media degradation - the data on the disk, however well
preserved, may still suffer from media and data obsolesence (the software and
hardware required to make the data functional becomes obsolete). In 100
years' time, will DVD still be a widely-used format?
- Physical media with only a 4.7 GB capacity are impractical for the long-term
storage demands of all but the smallest organizations.
A step in the right direction is still a positive step - I'm glad that companies
are investing R&D dollars and that distributors like LG are picking it up. We've
got PDF/A... perhaps someday there'll be DVD/A and DVD-Reader/A that will
become lifelong standards. (It's okay to dream!)
