Glen:
We hold the footage for 30 days and then record over. Our digital surveillance cameras have about a 4 week loop. If we need to keep a recorded section for any reason, it is copied to another repository. I know that when I researched the need for surveillance recordings I came across limitation of actions (Code of Virginia) for prosecution for embezzlement (we have cashiers who collect payment for water bills). This basically said hold surveillance recordings or other documentation/records pertaining to a suspected incident as long as necessary to investigate and, if pertinent, prosecute OR hold 10 years after suspected incident.

Homeland Security requirements (we are a utility) were a little more specific for security incidents. For incidents our retention is:
<SECURITY: INCIDENT REPORTS
Documents the reporting, investigation and action taken in regard to security-related incidents occurring at buildings and facilities. Materials may include paper reports and forms, photographic evidence and magnetic or electronic surveillance recordings.

Retain 3 years after last action then purge or destroy by shredding.
NOTE: All Incident reports to be filed with WaterISAC on secure portal. Video/Electronic surveillance digital playback and access is limited to Management. Staff only.>

Subject: [RM] Security Camera Footage

Anyone have a best practice or thought on how long to maintain security camera footage? Understanding that if there is an incident that footage would be maintained indefinitely.

Thanks in advance

Glen
