Carole said "... many Records people have experienced; being thrown into this position with no training or previous knowledge of Record Keeping practices. Not only am I fighting a learning curve to know and understand gas pipeline operations but also RIM, GARP, etc."

Not to worry Carole -- I haven't yet met the "born to be a Records Manager" (my university degree is in archeology and art history -- a very distant relation to records management).

I have seen postings on this list from records managers in your industry, and there may be lurkers as well.

The nice thing about records managers is they actually like to share their knowledge, so take heart, you're going to be all right!

I would start by trolling the Web site of each State's Archives group; they typically post their records management manuals, retention schedules, etc. The Australians particularly are good in this area: check out Peter Kurilecz' posting yesterday http://bit.ly/T8Cee0

Have fun!!!

Fred
