I agreed to work without either the old man or I stating what the rate of pay would be.  I was thinking I would get $50.00 instead of 50 cents, and at 16 I didn't know anything about contracts!  I think the guy lived through the depression and thought 50 cents was a lot of money.

One thing I DON'T miss was working hard for an old man that lived next to us for three days cleaning brush off two acre lot so he could till it. 
When I went to collect my pay, he flipped me a half dollar- I worked more than 24 hours and he felt that was ample compensation for a sixteen year old kid (late 1970's)!  Just proved there were some things not worth going back for!

Sounds like a poorly negotiated contract to me :)  Hopefully that lesson has helped you when working on more recent off-site storage contracts.
