For those of you who still have microfilm records, read the comments from Robert Breslawski and Robert Zigami at the end of this article. Vinegar syndrome is just one of the things that can go wrong with microfilm when it is developed improperly or stored and used improperly.

Subject: [RM] Fwd: Thousands of Microfilm Records Deteriorating

Thousands of Microfilm Records Deteriorating Probate Court Judge Don Davis said experts have told him that the film that holds the Microfiche documents are deteriorating. A putrid, vinegary smell permeates part of the record room where those files are kept, a sign of that deterioration. The technology is old and even the machines used to read the documents are no longer available.
