One of the dangers in holding onto backup tapes for too long is the confusion that can arise when disaster recovery is necessary. Are all the most current tapes identified? Are you recovering the most current data? Which version (i.e. tape) is the most current? If you've answered yes to all three questions, then why are the other older tapes being kept? Old data is not of any use. It only serves to confuse the issue. Having been the victim of old, obsolete, backup tapes being loaded after a disastrous event by 1) the Social Security Administration and 2) a County Recorder, I am a firm believer in keeping only the most current data available and not keeping the old. It does NOT make for good customer relations.
