 I've had everything from a dead Ocotillo cactus branch stuck in cast iron stove to fresh cedar (that's when we found out our daughter suffered from Cedar Fever) to pine to artificial.  Now, if I put up a tree, it's artificial with lights.  Now if I decorate, I put up ornaments on my burglar bars festooned with garlands and lights.
